What I Think About 5 Sundarikkal

I’m happy to see that Malayalam cinema is going through quite a revolutionary and evolutionary period. The so-called new generation movies are really being appreciated and how. I no longer feel interested to watch Hindi movies anymore. I prefer sticking to the wave of really entertaining movies coming out of  Mollywood. Just recently I watched 5 Sundarikal as I personally quite like the short film format a lot. I have watched Kerala Café that came out several years back and enjoyed that one as well. Unlike Kerala Café, this venture has just 5 films in all dealing with various contemporary issues.

Short Film 1-Sethulakshmi

This movie effectively tackles an evil that our country is currently infested with-child abuse. Sethulakshmi leaves you feeling grim and disturbed without any vulgar or violent content. The two kids in the movie in the movie-Anika and Chethan have done a remarkable job. This film features scenic locales.I think the little girl in the movie could have been saved from her grim fate if her mother had been more caring, concerned and compassionate.

Moral of the story-Ask your daughter why she came home late gently instead of lashing out at her for that.

Short Film 2-EshaIsha Sharvani

The depression that loomed over me after watching Sethulakshmi was washed away to some extend when I watched Esha. This is just a comedy entertainer with Nivin Pauly and Isha Shervani in the lead roles. I think they both did a decent job. Isha does her classic rope moves one more which we last saw in Kisna. The movie has an element of comic suspense till the end.

Moral of the story-Where women are concerned, always expect the unexpected.

Short Film 3-Gowri

Kavya Madhavan and Biju Menon assume lead roles in this film. Rimi Tomy makes her first silverscreen appearance in this movie in a role that any other actress could have done well or even better. I did not like this film because it just dragged  on without any purpose and also left me really confused. It just seemed incomplete and I found many questions unanswered. I don’t know if that was intentional or whether my understanding of this movie was poor. The only thing I liked about this film was the few glimpses of Munnar.

Moral of the story-Houses in Munnar could be haunted. Beware!!!!

Short Film 4-Kullante Bharya

Dulquer Salman does a commendable job as a crippled photographer residing in a low class colony who spends his time observing people voyeuristically. A newly married couple moves in and become victims of gossip because the wife is taller than the husband. Dulquer helplessly watches their trials and tribulations in the colony.

Moral of the story-Ignore this question-“What will people say?”

Short Film 5-Aami

Fahad Fasil plays the lead role in this movie doing what he does best-play a character having grey shades. He does everything we expect him to-get involved in some crooked real estate business, cavort with his ex-girlfriend, be as loving as possible to his wife and so on and so forth. He makes his entry watching the Aashiq Banaaye Aapne video. Was he trying to reinforce the fact that he is indeed the Emraan Hashmi of Malayalam cinema? In my opinion, he does not need to as none of his contemporaries seem to be trying to steal that crown.

Moral of the story-Don’t involve yourself in business activities at night .

Fahad

So that was my take on 5 Sundarikal. Watch it if you like short films some of which deal with issues that are socially relevant.
